Synopsis:

It is a story of love, understanding boundaries, and breaking societal stereotypes.

It describes the story of a well-accomplished female, a boss of her own company, who meets and falls in love with a younger member of her staff whom she had an earlier encounter with.

Cast

Genevieve is played by Bimbo Ademoye.

She is a smart and goal-oriented young woman. She is beautiful and kind-hearted but with a strict disposition, ensuring she never blurs the line between professionalism and personal relationships.

Desmond is played by Eso Dike.

He is super talented, confident, and a goal-getter, yes because once he sets his mark, he ensures he goes the whole gamut to retrieve and earn whatever it is he has locked on target, Genevieve this time I guess.

Diana is played by Blessing Onwukwe.

She is Desmond’s’ mother, a woman who believes in not switching roles. She stays true to the age-long belief that the place of a woman is in the kitchen.

Cheluchi is played by Gusty Chibuike.

She is the sister to Desmond, a sharp-tongued and typical depiction of the young and carefree lady with no care in the world except seeing everyone around her all happy and smiling.

She never accepts what is regarded as “societal norms” but instead makes her own rules along the way, something she reckons her brother should always do especially now that his choice of partner almost hitting a brick wall.

Pretty Amadi is cast as Sam.

She is friends with our lead cast Genevieve. A good friend of the latter who makes sure she takes the time to enjoy herself instead of immersing herself in work all the time.

Story

Thirty to Thirty-One is one story that is typical and experienced in our day-to-day living as men and women seeking love and fulfillment while bowing to the supremacy of the societally accepted norms for loving and partnering.

This time our two love birds, Genevieve and Desmond decide to walk the rough path and redefine what love is supposed to mean for a wide variety of people.

It once again exposes the bias the society has for the female folk by constantly limiting their chances of finding love, pushing factors like age, success, financial attainment, and more to the forefront.

Thirty to Thirty One tries to bring to the fore the importance of values and ethos, love and understanding, compatibility, and chemistry as the core values and acceptable factors that should be the determinants when we choose who to fall in love with and marry.

Character Development:

Bimbo Ademoye has always remained one of the finest actresses coloring our screens, and in every outing, Bimbo’s versatility and seamless transitions and depictions have always stood out, playing Genevieve, a successful and well nurtured young woman, was no exception.

Bimbo did not disappoint, I loved her portrayal of the character and true to type she cleverly delivered.

Eso Dike has been steadily climbing the ladder and establishing himself as one of the most sought-after actors in the industry.

His portrayal of Desmond, a quick-witted and straight-to-the-point no BS kinda guy in this movie was quite remarkable.

Blessing Onwukwe who played Diana, carries that distinctive attribute in every Nigerian mother who is trying to accept today’s reality as it pertains to the roles of women in society.

Though she kinda overreacted in some of the scenes, pushing the boundaries of what we could accept as normal to what can only be seen in Nollywood movies.

Gusty Chibuike who was cast as Cheluchi, the funny and easygoing junior sister to Desmond did portray the character correctly. I loved the childish mien that she infused into the character making sure she properly portrayed the innate characteristics of junior sisters.

I loved the way she stood up for others most notably when she noticed any form of intimidation to the more junior person, she even challenged her mother when the latter put some spanner in the work between Genevieve and her son Desmond.

Gusty truly had guts, and I know you could relate too.

Let’s know what you think- “Did Cheluchi played by Gusty Chibuike give you that junior sister vibe?”

Now let’s continue with the rest of the video.

Pretty Amadi’s role was that of a friend who stays close to protect the interest of her friend. It wasn’t that deep, but it complemented the story.

Cinematography

The Editing and Camera work was not bad, it was a blend of cinematic and TV standard resolution.

The camera angles were not that bad, I loved the fact that our DOPs are beginning to understand what the word “MOVIE” truly means.

Directing

The Director Mo Fakorede’s directorial outing was a bit average, few mix-ups here and then the abrupt ending, though brought some closure to the story, but we’d have loved to see one last scene delivering a better closing in the typical ”lived happily ever after “ manner, like it is in movies with this kind of storyline.

Overall I’d give the directing a “B”

Theme & Message

Society has foisted this stereotype that a man must be a gazillion years older than his spouse and the place of a woman is in the kitchen and the other room, lending the phrase from Nigeria’s former president; however, this movie did break those widely held beliefs and tropes.

Genevieve and Desmond against all odds, proved to everyone that when there’s love and purposefulness, surmounting obstacles that are laid on your path, though enervating, would eventually become rewarding as long as you stay on course.

Conclusion

Thirty to Thirty-One by Omoni Oboli TV is a good movie, with few casts, not so many locations, and a good plot, one that could be considered peculiar.

It gets a rating of 4.5/10.
